Video back-up system and method for storing and retrieving data for plates produced with a laser platemaker. The image data is recorded with a video tape recorder having a helical scanning head, and indexing signals are recorded in an audio track on the tape. The image data is recorded in a bi-phase modulated form which is readily demodulated and which permits the original carrier to be recovered easily. The recorder is interfaced with the computer and a time code generator for rapid accessing of the image data.
