PURPOSE:To prepar the titled compound in high yield, by the direct catalytic partial oxidation of methane with an oxidizing agent generating oxygen anion radical, using a molybdenum oxide as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Methanol and formaldehyde are obtained by reacting methane with an oxidizing agent capable of easily generating oxygen anion radical, e.g. dinitrogen monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, etc. in the presence of an oxidation catalyst comprising an oxide of molybdenum. The oxidation catalyst is prepared by supporting an oxide of molybdenum on a carrier such as silica, alumina, etc. by impregnation, equilibrium adsorption, etc., drying the mixture at 100-200 deg.C, and calcining in air at 350-700 deg.C. The ratio of the molybdenum oxide (in terms of oxide) to the carrier is preferably 0.5-6wt%. The amount of the oxidizing agent is 0.05-10mol, preferably 0.5-5mol per 1mol of methane. |
