The scrap is first heated to ca. 200 deg. C. and a soft vacuum with a limited addn. of inert gas in a chamber (a), so gases evolved by the polymers are driven into a final combustion chamber (b) while the temp. in chamber (a) is raised to 415 deg. C., and finally to 510 deg. C. Pulsed inert gas is then fed into chamber (a). Chamber (b) contains a burner, which is fed with either a C3H8/C4H10/air mixt. producing a chamber temp. of 1500 deg. C., or O2 and H2 producing a chamber (b) temp. of 2000 deg. C. Chamber (b) is pref. followed by a cooler in which the Hg condenses, and then by a cold trap and a vacuum pump. A controller operates valves to provide the inert gas pulses. Used in treatment of all types of scrap, esp. spent batteries contg. Hg or its cpds.
|
