A liq. crystal compn. for electrooptical display devices which has a sufficient dielec. polarity to dissolve large amts. of polar dopants and dichroic dyes contains the diketones(I, R1 = C1-18 alkyl, perfluoroalkyl, or alkoxy; R2 = C1-C12 alkyl or perfluoroalkyl; and X = 1,4-trans-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, and 4'4-cyclohexylphenylene). Thus, the preparation of 1-≮4-pentylbiphenyl-(4')-yl≉-1,3-butanedione consists of mixing a soln. of 4-(4-pentylphenyl)acetophenone 265 g in EtOAc 300 ml with Et2O lL contg. Na 23 g, stirring the soln. for 24 hr, filtering off the Na salt, washing the salt wtih Et2O, shaking with H2O and Et2O to give a solid.
