In order to reduce the mechanical stresses which are induced by temperature gradients within the electrode strand in graphite electrodes which are used in arc furnaces for producing steel, the sections forming the electrode strand are constructed from a plurality of parts. These parts are arranged concentrically at a distance from one another, the gaps between the parts preferably being filled with a compressible compound. The magnitude of the induced mechanical stresses is considerably reduced by splitting the electrode strand into a plurality of strands with a small wall thickness.
