A shaft furnace for firing and sintering lumpy material, such as limestone or the like, with lateral extraction orifices, located at the transition between the firing zone and cooling zone and penetrating the furnace wall, for at least partial extraction of circulating gases consisting of a mixture of fuel gases and cooling air flowing upwards in a cooling zone, is characterised by a vertical central firing chamber (24) which is arranged essentially symmetrically to the longitudinal axis (26) of the furnace and concentrically to the furnace wall (28) and is open at the bottom and to which circulating gases extracted through the extraction orifices (46) can be fed, via a circulating-gas line (50) with at least one adjoining circulating-gas duct (34, 36), close to the upper end of said chamber (24) or to its burner (38) which is located at the top and can be charged with solid, liquid or gaseous fuels. <IMAGE>
