The brake unit for friction brakes, in particular block brakes of rail vehicles, has a double-walled brake lever (8a, 8b) in a housing (1). The brake lever can be moved by a brake motor and is mounted pivotably on the housing (1) close to its bottom end by means of its pin support (9). At a position slightly offset from this, the brake lever is connected in articulated fashion by means of a further pin support (10) to an output member, which preferably has a slack adjuster (12). The pin support (10) has pins (16) integrally formed on the slack adjuster (12), their length corresponding to approximately half the depth of the bearing bores (17) in the brake lever cheeks (8a, 8b). Machined into the cheeks (8a, 8b) to the side of the slack adjuster (12) are grooves (21) which open into that half shell of the bearing bores (17) which is not subject to braking forces, extend forwards away from the bearing bores (17) and are open at the end. The width and depth of the grooves (21) corresponds to the dimensions of the pins (16). Extension pieces (18) which extend the length of the pins (16) at least approximately to the depth of the bearing bores (17) or thickness of the cheeks (8a, 8b) can be attached to the pins (16). The extension pieces (18) can be cup-shaped, allowing them to be slipped into the bearing bores (17) and over the pins (16). The extension pieces (18) permit simple mounting or dismounting of the output member or slack adjuster (12) on/from the brake unit. <IMAGE>
