Device for setting a specific angular position of the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine in relation to one of the two piston dead centres of a cylinder, in which a signal emitter is provided which senses a specific piston position and in which a geared motor connected to an angle pick-up, which motor can be coupled to the crankshaft, and an electronic measuring control device, to which the required angle can be fed, are provided, half of the angle described by the crankshaft being measured when the crankshaft rotates from passing the specific piston position to reattainment of that same position and the intermediate piston dead centre thereby being automatically determined, from the position of which dead centre the crankshaft is further rotated about the required angle and then automatically stopped. By measuring both of the crankshaft positions corresponding to the specific piston position under the same conditions, that is under tension or under pressure by the connecting rod, the bearing play can be eliminated. The device can be used for gauging crankshafts, setting injection pumps and ignition equipment and for setting specific positions of shafts, in general.
