Improvements in the production of Venetian mosaic surfaces.

A panel with a Venetian mosaic or terrazzo surface is produced by providing a support surface (10) with partitioning walls (16) to separate areas of the desired design, placing coloured chips (18) in respective areas, and laying settable material (which may be of different colours in different areas) thereover. The set layer (20) is removed, and the front face (formed on the support surface (10) is ground. The walls (16) may be incorporated therein. They may be provided by means of sheet material (22) in which the design is carved and which is adhered to the support surface (10). The support (10) may be transparent so that the building up of the design can be observed through it. The product may be translucent, with mosaic surfaces ground on each side. It may be incorporated into structural units.
