An electronic apparatus, for example a television recording device (VTR 23) is placed into a desired but complex operating mode, for example for the automatic recording of a desired programme, by manually scanning one or several control code groups which are printed on selection cards, by means of an optical pen or other scanning instrument. The selection cards concerned (30-34; 67-71) exhibit control code groups (18; 36-42) for selecting, for example, the operating mode, the channel, the day of the week of the time of the beginning of a recording (with the identification "AM" for morning and "PM" for afternoon) and an end time for the recording. The code signals, which are supplied by the scanning instrument or character reader (10) are processed in a data processing circuit (22) which can be constructed as a microprocessor and contained in the television recording device (VTR 23) in order to generate control signals for the television recording device (VTR 23) in dependence on the information contained in the scanned control code groups (18; 36-42). As an alternative, a combination of an FM receiver and a hi-fi audio recorder can be placed into an operating mode for automatic recording or into another complex operating mode by scanning selection cards (67-71) by means of a scanning instrument or character reader (10) either of which is allocated to such a combination. <IMAGE>
