What is provided is a simply constructed winding device for a backdrop, for example for use in a photographic studio, which guarantees a smooth winding and unwinding and which ensures that any intended winding position is obtained and maintained without further action. For this, there is an actuating roller, connected to the winding shaft for the backdrop, and a catch mechanism which is formed by springs (7) and balls (8) received by the actuating roller, by catch holes located in the adjacent bearing plate and by a setting ring (4) which is screwed onto the winding shaft on the outside of the bearing plate (1) and which pulls the actuating roller (2) and therefore the balls (8) up against the bearing plate (1) counter to the spring effect of the springs (7). The actuating roller is designed for guiding a chain (12), by means of which it can be set in motion in both directions. <IMAGE>
