The invention relates to an explosion-proof and firedamp-proof lighting fixture for use in areas exposed to the danger of explosion and firedamp. The aim is to provide an explosion-proof and firedamp-proof lighting fixture for sodium-vapour lamps. The object is for the components required to operate the sodium-vapour lamp to be integrated in the pressure-proof space in such a way that safe application is possible owing to control of the temperatures arising. The arrangement of the ignition device with respect to the lamp holder and the retaining elements thereof is such that the maximum length of 200 mm for the high-tension cable of said device is not exceeded and a maximum air gap of 10 mm is maintained between the lamp holder and ignition device. Retaining elements of the ignition device serve to dissipate heat to the housing components. An additional safety device that is connected to the switching-off system of the lighting fixture responds in the event of breakage of the lamp bulb.
