Filaments, esp. of molten glass, are drawn and impregnated to form strands, which then travel through a cutting machine to produce short, flat, chopped strands with rectangular crosssections. The chopped strands are next subjected to a rolling action so they acquire a round crosssection in which the fibers are compressed to a high density. The chopped strands are pref. allowed to fall onto a vibrating plate which provides a rolling and compacting force to produce the round crosssection. The strands are then fed to a dryer. The chopped and compacted strands have a high density and high mechanical strength suitable for reinforcing prods. |
