The process is intended to simplify the production of coffee packs. For this purpose, ground roast coffee is first compacted to form tablets (1). The tablets (1) are thereafter enclosed in packs (4) which consist of filter material. As a result of mechanical action, for example by means of rollers (5) or ultrasonic waves, the tablets in the closed packs (4) are returned to powder form, the volume occupied by the coffee increasing. The tablet size and pack volume are selected in such a way that the coffee in powder form essentially fills the entire pack volume. The packs obtained are deformable and therefore fit different internal shapes of filter baskets in pressure-brewing systems, for example Espresso machines. They have a high degree of filling. <IMAGE>
