<p>PR-5656 PROCESS FOR 1,1-DIHALO-4-METHYL-1,3-PENTADIENES 1,1-Dihalo-4-methyl-1,3-pentadienes are prepared by the catalytic dehydrohalogenation of 1,1,1,3-tetrahalo-4-methylpentane, in a novel process which involves heating the latter to a temperature of from about 160.degree.C to about 220.degree.C in the presence of an amide selected from the group consisting of (1) N,N-dialkylamides of the formula in which R1 and R2 are independently C1-C6 alkyl or con jointly form C2-C6 alkylene, and R3 is hydrogen or C1-C12 alkyl; and (2) cyclic amides of the formula in which R4 is C2-C12 alkylene, and R5 is C1-C12 alkyl, and in the further optional presence of an inorganic salt selected from the group consisting of alkali metal halides, alkaline earth metal halides, and hydrohalide salts of amines having the formula R6R7R8N, in which R6, R7, and R8 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C2 alkyl.</p> |
