PURPOSE:To provide a serial printer reduced in size and weight, by a method wherein the engagement between an engaging member and an engaging cam means is released by a blank printing operation, and a carriage is reset to an initial position. CONSTITUTION:When a blank position of a type wheel reaches a printing position, an operation command coil 38 is energized to engage a clutch 22 and disengage a clutch 21. Although a shift-up driving gear 32 is rotated and a printing hammer 11 is driven, printing is not effected because the printing position is blank. Due to the rotation of the gear 32, a timing cam 32b is also rotated, a paper feed driving lever 47 slips off from a protuberant cam surface of the cam 32b, is engaged into a notched groove 33a of a transmtting plate 33, and the lever 47 is rotated in the direction of an arrow by the force of a spiral spring 48, resulting in that a rack 8 is rotated, and the engagement between teeth 8a of the rack 8 and cam teeth 52a of a carriage-driving gear 52 is relased. Accoridngly, the carriage 3 looses its support and is reset into the initial position by the force of a tension spring 7. |
