Decolouration, deodorisation and/or disinfection of vegetable, animal or microbial protein materials is effected by treating with a chlorite in an acid medium and then neutralising the excess chlorite with an S-contg. reducing agent until all traces of the chlorite have disappeared. The chloride is pref. NaClO2, used in a medium with a pH of 4-6. The reducing agent is pref. Na dithionite, which may be used in a small excess over the amt. required to react with the excess chlorite. The process is esp. applicable to animal blood plasma, esp. for improving its organoleptic qualities, reducing its germ count, and allowing it to be injected as a soln.
|
