The steering rack (1) has teeth (2) to engage a pinion (3). These are formed to pass around the rack rod itself, and at the same time, are displaced axially. The rack teeth have a variable pitch and this varies progressively from the rack centre to one end. The pinion has regularly spaced teeth. The rotation and displacement of the rack are different from those made when the tool for regular teeth is also used for the rack teeth.
