PURPOSE:To prevent a short circuit due to movement of free mercury generated at a positive electrode to a negative electrode by making the overlap width of a separator layer one fourth of the circumference or larger in a sandwich structure constituted with an impregnating material layer and a separator layer. CONSTITUTION:A separator layer 1 coated with a thin film of polymeric material on nonwoven fabric such as vinylon or the like and an impregnating material layer 2 made of alkaliproof nonwoven fabric are overlapped and wound concurrently, and the overlap width of the separator layer 1 is made one fourth of the circumference or larger to form a cylinder. Then, one end is bent inward in an L-shape, and a separator bottom 3' made of polyethylene or the like is adhered to form a cylindrical mercury cell separator. Therefore, by making the overlap width longer, a distance that the free mercury of the positive electrode side goes through the impregnating material 2 surface and reaches the negative electrode side can be made longer, thus the short circuit or deterioration during discharging can be prevented. |
