PURPOSE:To enable to perform a precise and stable measurement of a surface level of a molten metal, by installing a projector which irradiates the molten metal surface along a container wall from right overhead. CONSTITUTION:A projector 6 consists of a light source 7 and a mirror 8 positioned on an extension of a container wall 1a. A spreading luminous flux from the light source 7 is reflected by the mirror 8, the molten metal surface is irradiated with it along the container 1a from right overhead, and an upper surface 1c of the container 1a is irradiated with a part thereof. In the case of a powder casting, a picture having an illuminating part 10 is formed on a blackened powder 4 surface by means of said illuminating light, and this permits a clear detection of a boundary between the powder surface and the container wall 1a. In the case of an open casting, both natural light of a molten metal 2 and the reflecting light of the illuminating light are collected by a photoelectric element, and this permits the clear detection of a boundary between the container wall and the molten metal, which results in performing a precise and a stable measurement of a molten metal surface. |
