The invention relates to a process for producing metal sponge from an ore by reduction of the ore at an elevated temperature by means of a reducing gas in at least two successive reduction chambers. The gas is in each case passed through a reduction chamber, processed after leaving the reduction chamber and then passed into the next reduction chamber. For processing, the gas is heated to a temperature of more than 1000 DEG C, finely disperse carbon is mixed into the heated gas and oxygen is introduced into the mixture. The invention also relates to equipment for carrying out the process. As a result of the invention, the total energy requirement in the production of metal sponge is considerably reduced and the consumption of methane as the reducing agent is lowered. <IMAGE>
