The displacement and the compression volume of the cylinder of a piston internal combustion engine, particularly for motor vehicles, can be varied for adjustment to the instantaneous load during operation. This is done by dividing the connecting rod into two parts, between which an adjustable linkage is arranged by means of which the effective length of the connecting rod can be varied. Two oscillating links mounted on adjustable eccentrics and connected to one another by a slide ring joint serve as linkage. The linkage can be used to drive a piston pump. By varying the displacement and compression volume, the efficiency of the internal combustion engine can be improved in the partial load range.
