In the process for the aerobic degradation of organic solids, material to be degraded is packed into a degrading tower (9), from where it is removed layer-wise from the bottom and re-used as a top layer. To impart to the material to be degraded a moisture content of not more than 50% by weight, the solids are mixed with drier material. In addition, the removal process is only started after the desired degradation temperature has been reached in the material to be degraded. The degradation temperature in the material to be degraded is allowed to rise, in places, to 70 to 78 DEG C over 1 to 2 days, while the relative atmospheric humidity in the degradation tower during the degradation process is kept at least approximately constant. The degraded material is shaped into pressed articles, which are dried in bulk. This process has the following advantages: 1. Sustained removal of offensive odours 2. Inactivation of pathogenic, in particular parasitic, organisms 3. Constituents (N, NH3, P) which can be used as plant nutrients are largely retained 4. The degraded material is dried to a solids content of 20%, dispensing with subsequent maturation and drying by means of clamps. 5. The substances to be processed are not contaminated in the process, no additives, such as sawdust, tree bark, straw or peat being admixed as so-called carbon sources 6. A product with a maximum water content of 20% which can be stored and handled economically is generated.

|
