A high-reactance autotransformer of the shell type, especially for use as a ballast for gas-discharge lamps, has primary and secondary windings (W1, W2) arranged on a common magnetic core (M), and a magnetic shunt path via leakage-field stacks (S) between the two windings. For optimum dimensioning with a minimum possible material cost, the turns ratio of the primary and secondary windings is approximately 0.8 to 1.2, and the width of the leakage-field stack is approximately 0.9 to 1.0 times the width of the magnetic core (M) which supports the primary and secondary windings (W1, W2). In order to create a core shape which allows economical mass production, the magnetic core (M) is preferably constructed as a cruciform core and is arranged in a core shell consisting of two U-shaped magnetic return path limbs (R). <IMAGE>
