In a test rig (1) for compacting soil samples (5), a supporting structure (11) accommodating the drive means (slide 14) for the drop weight (21) can be pivoted about a vertically directed axis (A) relative to a frame (2) provided with a work table (3) for a sample cylinder (4) and can be locked in different angular positions by means of stops (32, 33). The sample can therefore be acted upon by the drop weight (21) in both the marginal area of the sample cylinder (4) and its centre without the latter having to be moved.
