A device (11) for lifting the drop weight (7) of a soil-testing rig (1) or the like consists of gripping jaws (16, 17) attached to a slide (14) which can be driven vertically in a rectilinearly oscillating manner. By means of the gripping jaws (16, 17), the drop weight (7) can be coupled in its bottom dead centre position automatically to the slide and can be released from the latter after an adjustable length of travel. The gripping jaws (16, 17), designed as clamping jaws, are here pivotably mounted eccentrically on pins (18, 19) so that the clamping bar attached to the drop weight (7) is clamped in place automatically and can be released by means of vertically adjustable run-up ramps (28, 29). The drop weight is therefore lifted by the set drop height during every stroke, and in fact irrespective of the degree to which the soil sample has already been compacted. When the slide reverses to move upwards, the clamping bar is in the process clamped in place between the clamping jaws; the actual position of the drop weight therefore has no effect on the distance to be covered. And since the clamping connection can be released at virtually any point, the drop height is infinitely variable. <IMAGE>
