PURPOSE:To easily manufacture alkali hydroxide at a low electrolytic voltage by chemically plating one surface of a cation exchange membrane facing to a cathode with a metal and by supporting the other surface by means of an anode in a contact state. CONSTITUTION:A metal such as Pt, Pd or Ir is deposited on one surface of a cation exchange membrane of a fluorocarbon polymer or the like facing to a cathode by a chemical plating method. The other surface of the membrane is supported by means of an anode in a contact state, and the membrane and electrodes are installed in an electrolytic cell while leaving a space between the membrane and cathode. An aqueous soln. of alkali metallic chloride is electrolyzed with the cell to manufacture alkali hydroxide. By this method electrolysis is carried out without making the electrolytic voltage high and unstable, and the mechanical damage of the membrane is hardly caused. |
