PURPOSE:To obtain catalytic activity of a methanol electrode by immersing tungsten carbide or molybdenum-tungsten carbide in non-platinum fomily into water for activating treatment. CONSTITUTION:Tungsten carbide powder is pressed under a pressure of 1ton/ cm<2> to form a pellet. This pellet is used as an electrode catalyst and immersed in water at room temperature. Catalytic activity is measured at proper intervals in 4mol/litter methanol, under the condition of 2 N sulfuric acid at 50 deg.C, at 0.5V (based on a reversible hydrogen electrode), and such a secular change as shown by a solid line 1 in the figure is obtained. Methanol oxidizing current of 50muA per 1g cathlyst after 15 days, 110muA after 60 days have been obtained. |
