A safety hook having a bowl (8) and shank (10) pivotable relative to a latch (4) on a fulcrum pin (16). A catch face (42) on the latch (4) is engageable by a detent face (44) on a cranked trigger (22) positioned in an aperture (18) in the shank (10) and pivotable on a pin (24) extending perpendicular both to the fulcrum pin (16) and the central axis of the shank (10). A chamfered edge (26) extends substantially flush with the adjacent face of the shank (10) and the edte (30) of the associated aperture is also chamfered. A V-spring (34) biasses the trigger (22).
