A valve train of an overhead camshaft engine is provided with a mechanism for taking up slack in the valve train. The slack take up mechanism is constituted by a tappet (22), an oil pressure chamber (28), a coil spring (30), etc. and constructed such that leakage of the oil pressure chamber (28) takes place for take up adjustement during each cycle of valve operation.
