Method using light arc furnaces is for melting scrap. controlling the radiation load on the furnace walls. On the furnace walls (2) is applied a material which has a higher vapour pressure at the temps. rapidly occurring on the walls when fed-in scrap (5) no longer screens radiation from the light arcs (3) than when the scrap does screen. Gas coming from the furnace is analysed (7) with relation to the wall lining substance or its reaction products. - The wall-lining material used is an oxide of Gp II metal pref. stronthium, and when concn(s) increases exceed a specific threshold value, more scrap metal is fed in or the light arc voltage is reduced.
