PURPOSE:To measure the settling rate of sea salt particles accurately by holding silver or silver oxide on a carrier for measuring of sea salt particles. CONSTITUTION:A carrier such as gauze, glass fiber fabrics or synthetic fiber fabrics is washed with pure water to remove chlorine ions; thereafter, the carrier is immersed in an aq. soln. of a silver salt soluble in water, for example, silver nitrate, is squeezed loosely and is then air-dried. When UV rays are irradiated thereto, the silver nitrate is decomposed by the UV rays and part of the brown or black colored fine particles of silver are held in the form of silver oxide. Such carrier is fitted in an outer frame made of wood and is installed vertically in a measuring place. The chlorine ions in the sea salt particles captured by the same are fixed on the carrier and cause reaction with the silver ions partly ionized from the silver or silver oxide, by which silver chloride is formed. After exposure for a specified period, the carrier is removed from the frame, and the silver chloride is determined, whereby the amt. of the sea salt particles is measured. |
