1,130,462. Purification of ammonia synthesis gas. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP. 15 Dec., 1966 [14 Feb., 1966], No. 56321/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division F4] Ammonia synthesis gas, that is a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen is purified by scrubbing the gas mixture with anhydrous liquid ammonia at 2 to 100 kg./sq. cm. tc cool the gas to - 10‹ to - 50‹ C. and saturate it with ammonia vapour and compressing and then cooling the gas to 0‹ C. to condense out the liquid ammonia. A preferred embodiment is shown in Fig. 1 in which a 1 : 3-nitrogen : hydrogen gas mixture is cooled in 2, and with anhydrous liquid ammonia 8 passed into the scrubber. The resultant gas stream 10 free of water vapour and at - 10‹ to- 50‹ C. is compressed in 11, cooled in 14, and con densed ammonia and impurities re moved in 18. These steps may be repeated in 21, 24, 28 and 31 and the purified gas stream 32 is then combined with the recirculating syn thesis gas stream 33, the combinec streams being catalytically formec into ammonia in the converter 35. The converted gas stream 37 is then passed into the heat exchanger 38, cooler 41 and separator 45, where liquid ammonia is removed. The residual gas stream is recirculated to the converter 35.
