[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R=Ph (possibly substituted), R 1 = phenylene (possibly substituted), n=0 (when m=2, 3 or 4) or 1 (when m=1), half or more than half (an integral no.) of the total Y's are S and at least one Y is O; provided that when m =2, YR = SR and at least one nuclear link is o- or m-. Examples describe the preparation of a number of such compounds by reacting an alkali metal phenate or thiophenate with an appropriate halophenyl ether or thioether.
