[Also in Division D1] The invention comprises amides of the formula wherein. R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-4 alkyl group, and at least one of X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>2</SP> represents chlorine, and the other represents hydrogen or when R<SP>1</SP> is a methyl group, X<SP>1</SP> is a trifluoromethyl group and X<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen. The compounds are prepared by condensing a hydrazine of the formula with a compound of the formula wherein Z represents halogen or a substituted amino group. The reaction is preferably effected by heating the reactants in an acidic aqueous alcoholic solution. Examples relate to the preparation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4- acetylaminophenyl)-, 1 - (3 - chlorophenyl)- 3 - (4 - acetylaininophenyl)-, 1 - (3 - chlorophenyl) - 3 - (propionylaminophenyl)- and 1 - (3 - trifluoromethylphenyl) - 3 - (4 - acetyl - aminophenyl) - pyrazolines. The amides are used as optical brighteners (see Division D1). 4 - Acetylamico - # - chloropropiophenone is prepared by reacting acetanilide with #- chloropropionyl chloride in the presence of AlCl 3 . 4-Chlorophenylhydrazine is prepared by reduction of the diazonium chloride of 4-chloroaniline with sodium sulphite.
