[Also in Group XXXV] A motor vehicle gear-box receives drive through one or other of two electromagnetic powder clutches (see Group XXXV) from the engine flywheel, one clutch providing a direct drive through shaft 85, and the other driving through hollow shaft 43 into the gear-box at pinion 45 engaging countershaft gear 163. The second-speed gear 197 rotates on the main shaft 85 by means of needle bearings 199 and carries crown teeth 201 which may be engaged by the internal splined teeth 203 of a synchromesh ring 205 splined to hub 209 fixed to the main shaft. This hub has slots 213 which accommodate detent plates 215 biased outwardly by annular springs 217. Each of these plates has its right-hand end located with some freedom in an axial notch 223 in a blocker ring 225. When ring 205 is shifted to the right it drives plates and blocker rings to the right so that conical surfaces 229, 231 engage to synchronize the gear 197. The loose fit of plates 215 in notches 223 allows the blocker ring to turn into a semi-blocking position of its teeth 227 with the teeth 203 until synchronization. Further movement to engage the teeth 201 releases the indexing dimples 219. To engage the lowspeed drive, gear 179 is moved to the left to engage its internal splined teeth 181 with teeth 185, the drive being then through gears 169 and 193, an overrunning clutch 195, and a sleeve 187 which is normally free on the main shaft. To engage reverse gear, gear 179 is shifted to the right to mesh with idler gear 177. |
