PURPOSE:To cool molten metal under stable cooling conditions and to obtain a good ingot by controlling electromagnetic force in such a way that the position where molten metal starts contact with a mold comes to a preset position. CONSTITUTION:When the amt. of the molten metal 12 stored in a tundish 1 increases and the static pressure acting upon the metal 12 near the boundary 17 increases, the diameter of a contracted part 22 increases. According to said increase, the position where the metal 12 starts contact with the inside surface of a mold tube 33 comes forward of a desired contact starting position 23 along the drawing direction 45 of the metal 12. Thereupon a control means 28 increases the electromagnetic force by the 2nd coil 21 by increasing the supply electric power from an electric power source 19. The increased static pressure is compensated by the increased electromagnetic force, the part 22 returns to the home position, and the position 23 is maintained in the desirable position. Thus the solidified thickness of a solidified shell 22 is maintained at a specified value and the good ingot is obtained. |
