Corrugated cardboard, or a double-skinned extruded plastics structure, with the corrugations filled with polystyrene foam, or other originally particulate material, may be made by one of two processes. In the first, the channels of a batch of vertical sheets of corrugated cardboard or extrudates, sealed at their lower ends, are gravity-filled with pre-expanded polystyrene beads, then sealed at their upper ends. In the second, a continuous sheet of paper is unrolled, gummed, covered with PS beads, then a layer of corrugated paper, another layer of beads, and finally the top sheet of pre-gummed paper. The finished assemblies are heated to allow full expansion and fusing together of the beads. Used in packaging, display boards, thermal and sound insulation panels, etc. The polystyrene filling makes the panels stronger and more rigid, and wet-strength and insulation properties are improved. |
