A bipolar electrode for detecting the fetal heart rate during labour. A flexible sucking cup can be applied to the scalp of the fetus and contains a pointed electrode rod which extends obliquely to the cup axis and hooks with its tip into the scalp of the fetus under pressure. The electrode rod carries a plastic cylinder as a tip protection and stop element. The second electrode connection is open to the outer surface of the cup; leads from the two electrode connections lead to the recording device. This novel electrode simplifies application to the scalp of the fetus while providing optimum protection of mother and doctor and can be easily removed again.
