PURPOSE:To remarkably improve the compression rate of data, by converting a character part designated with a specific mark into a character signal having less amount of data for transmission. CONSTITUTION:A transmitter for pictures and writings transmits an original 1 having a character part 9 such as alphanumeric and a part 10 other than the character part consisting of graph. In this case, a specific mark (reference mark) 11 is provided in advance at the position corresponding to the character part 9. The specific mark 11 is detected from a picture signal obtained from the scanning of the original 1 and the characters in the region designated with the specific mark 11 are read at a character reader. The read character is converted into a character signal having less data amount for transmission. As to the part 10 where no specific mark 11 is detected, the picture signal at each scanning line can be transmitted through band compression encoding. |
