The invention relates to a diaphragm pump in which the primary working medium is admitted to a tubular hose diaphragm composed of elastomer material and in which the secondary medium is located in a pump chamber surrounding the diaphragm. The invention ensures that in the case of diaphragm pumps of the generic type the maximum possible piston displacements and/or delivery flows and delivery pressures can be achieved for the lowest possible weight and/or the smallest possible overall dimensions. This is achieved in that the pump chamber is defined by a spherical housing and the outer circumferential surface of the hose diaphragm, which is clamped in the housing by its two ends. In addition a method applicable to the above-mentioned diaphragm pump ensures that in the event of a defect in the diaphragm the primary working medium is not contaminated by the secondary medium to be pumped, which as a rule is viscous and abrasive or laden with solids. This is achieved, inter alia, by the fact that in each phase of the induction stroke of the diaphragm pump the timing of the volume reduction of the working medium inside the hose diaphragm is varied in such a way that this reduction in the volume can be completed without any delay due to recovery of the elastically extended hose diaphragm exerting pressure on the working medium. <IMAGE>
