To provide, using simple and inexpensive means, a possibility of being able to prepare screed or the like in an ergonomically correct manner and with improved quality of the distribution and/or smoothing work, with the least-possible effort and the best-possible efficiency, an apparatus, extremely effective in use, for facilitating distribution and/or smoothing work of screed or the like is proposed, having a shield with a substantially plane outer face and a fastening device arranged on its inner side facing the user's leg and intended for the rapidly detachable securing of the shield to the user's lower leg in a position covering the user's knee at the front. In this arrangement, the apparatus can expediently have an abutment for the toe region of the foot and/or an abutment for the user's knee, which can be arranged on the shield and then advantageously formed by a recess or a projection on the inner side of the shield, or alternatively can be arranged on the fastening device. The abutment can also be adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the shield. It can furthermore expediently have side boundaries for the foot or knee bearing on the inner surface of the shield. Expediently, a receiving bed for the user's knee preferably having padding can also be provided on the inner side of the shield, which padding protects the knee situated in the working position from excessive pressure and corresponding premature fatigue, and in long-term use also protects against physical damage due to wearing.
