Flocculation test apparatus for determining the optimum flocculant requirement for treating turbid water, in which water flows at constant volume, a flocculant is added in variable amount, polyelectrolyte is added as flocculation aid to the prereactor 10 to 15 s after adding the flocculant, the flocculation takes place without using stirrers or internals in a pipe which has water flowing through it (pipe flocculation) and whose end is transparent, a laser system irradiates the pipe used for flocculation transversely in the region of its end, a photodiode having a cutoff frequency of over 1 kHz is so arranged that it picks up the laser beam emitted by the laser system on the other side of the pipe, and an amplifier device, known per se, for the electrical signal from the photodiode, responds only slightly to brief interruptions of the electric current due to interruptions of the laser beam resulting from flocks flowing past.
