The invention relates to the design of pistons and cylinders of a two-stroke internal combustion engine. These parts are so matched to one another that the upper edge of the outlet duct at the bottom dead centre of the piston essentially coincides with the piston head, a piston duct being so arranged as outlet duct in the piston that it runs from the piston head outwards at an angle and at positions above the bottom dead centre can make a connection with the outlet duct. By means of this arrangement it is ensured that outlet duct and overflow ducts are not opened simultaneously over the entire bottom dead centre area. It is thereby possible to reduce the discharge of unburnt fuel-air mixture considerably compared to the prior art.
