A device for the injection of water into an internal combustion engine draws the water by means of an injection pump (26) from a water tank (30) and delivers it by way of an injection nozzle (12), which is arranged in the air filter (14) of the internal combustion engine (10). The injection pump (26) is controlled by a control device which switches it on only above a predetermined torque and above a predetermined operating temperature of the internal combustion engine (10). Two switches (36, 56), operating as a function of a vacuum, which are connected to the intake system (22), serve for this purpose, a valve (48) operating as a function of the temperature being arranged in the connection of one switch (56) to the intake system (22). A cleaning pump (62), which is operated for a predetermined period after switching off the internal combustion engine (10) in order to prevent water seeping into the carburettor during operating pauses of the internal combustion engine (10), may be connected to the water pipe (32) to the injection nozzle (12). <IMAGE>
