The invention relates to an arrangement for generating a running light in a lamp chain with consecutively connected lamps that are successively lit. In order to install such a lamp chain more simply and easily, and in particular to dispense with complicated cabling of the lamps, and also to ensure the functionality in the event of failure of lamps, each lamp is fitted with a transmitter and a receiver. In this arrangement, the receiver output signals switch the transmitter. The range of the transmitter can be set such that it corresponds approximately to the transmitter/receiver spacing of adjacent lamps. The transmitter has a specific, predetermined ratio of the transmission time to the transmission pause duration. The receiver of a lamp is switched off during the transmission time of the transmitter. The lamp is lit during the transmission time of the transmitter. A flip-flop connected upstream of the transmitter determines the ratio of the transmission time to the transmission pause duration. Furthermore, a flash generator is provided which in the event of failure of the receiver output signals triggers the flip-flop and thus ensures proper operation of the lamp. <IMAGE>
