The invention relates to a device for embossing individual characters having embossing characters mounted movably for selection on a rotatable drum (2) which is stationary during the embossing, the front sides (5) of said embossing characters lying in each case in a plane parallel to the axis of rotation (37) of the drum (2). In order to be able to apply large embossing forces using such a device whilst also having easy operability, for example for embossing chassis numbers in motor vehicles, it is proposed to construct the embossing characters as embossing rams (4) which are guided radially in recesses (3) on the drum circumference and are retained in a first position by the force of a spring (14). They are assigned a common actuating device (16), with the aid of which they can be moved counter to the spring force along a path bounded by an anvil (9) acting as a counter bearing into a second position constituting the embossing position. <IMAGE>
