A measuring device exhibits a fixed probe (6) and a soft-iron body (1) which can be moved relative to the probe. Opposite the probe (6), two permanent magnets (4, 5) are attached to the soft-iron body so that the probe (6) is located in the magnetic field of the two permanent magnets (4, 5). The permanent magnets (4, 5) have a different width over their length. As a result, the probe (6) is exposed to a different magnetic flux when the permanent magnets (4, 5) move along the probe (6). <IMAGE>
