A pressure medium brake system is proposed in which a relay valve (8, 9) preconnected to the brake cylinders (10, 11, 12, 13) is used to transmit the brake pressure directly and by a short route from a pressure medium source (storage reservoir (5, 6)) into the brake cylinders (10, 11, 12, 13). The relay valve (8, 9) has two possible means of actuation, one by means of a solenoid valve (18, 19), which receives a current when the pedal is operated, and the other by means of control pressure from a pedal-operated brake pressure transducer, for example in the case of compressed air as pressure medium from a pedal-operated brake valve (7). The pressure medium brake system is preferably used on commercial vehicles. <IMAGE>
