At least the inner part of the spinning rotor (1) has a surface layer (4) which consists individually or in combination of iron carbide, iron boride, iron silicide or iron nitride. The spinning rotor (1) is tempered and thereby acquires an increased toughness, at the same time with a high yield point of the material. The surface layer (4) possesses a surface layer containing a foreign metal. The production of the spinning rotor takes place in steps. First, the spinning rotor is prefabricated from temperable steel. It then receives the surface layer and is subsequently either first tempered and then provided with the protective surface layer or vice versa. The protective surface layer can acquire a special outer skin. Finally, any material embrittlement caused by oxygen can be eliminated again by heating. The object is to prepare the surface of a spinning rotor and make it corrosion-resistant in such a way that good spinning results are obtained even after a long period of operation. <IMAGE>
